Sickened ... Bridie Dwyer

Abuser ... Fr Bill Carney

Tormented ... Paul Dwyer on communion day

THE mum of a man who took his own life over the childhood abuse he suffered at the hands of Fr Bill Carney has hit out at the perv priest’s continued attempts to evade justice.

Paul Dwyer was just 13 when he was raped by the vile cleric and was left so mentally tormented by the attacks that he committed suicide in 2005, when he was 31.

Carney, who was defrocked in 1992 and has lived in the UK for the past 20 years, was described in the Murphy report as a serial sex offender and there was evidence that he carried out at least 32 attacks on boys and girls.

He is expected to be extradited from the UK in the coming week after British detectives arrested him in London on foot of a European Arrest warrant.

He claimed in a BBC programme in 2010 that he was a good Christian and just wanted to get on with his life in peace now.

But Paul Dwyer’s mother Bridie has blasted the sick former priest and said he should be made to face the numerous families he destroyed when he preyed on their children.

In an emotional letter to the Irish Sun she said: “Bill Carney claims that he has spent the past 30 years of his life as a good Christian but what about the years before this, when the numerous counts of abuse took place? That’s not very Christian.”

Bridie added she was sickened by his claims that he wanted a second chance because her family had received no second chance. She said: “The Dwyer family have to live with the loss of a son, brother, uncle and dad. There are no second chances for us.”

And in a message directed towards the abuser she said: “If your conscience is as clear as you claim it to be you would return to Ireland and face the numerous families whose lives you have destroyed.”

Carney, ordained as a priest in 1974, was based in Ayrfield, north Dublin, where he abused both boys and girls.

In her report on clerical abuse in the archdiocese of Dublin, Judge Yvonne Murphy said: “Bill Carney is a serial abuser of children.

“The Commission is aware of complaints or suspicions of abuse against him in respect of 32 individuals. There is evidence that he abused many more children.”

His only convictions came in 1983, for two counts of indecent assault.
