DETECTIVE Chief Inspector Peter Fox came under fire this morning for a message he sent via Twitter late yesterday concerning information which had been suppressed by the Special Commission of Inquiry.

Wayne Roser SC, representing several senior police at the inquiry, said the tweet was ‘‘not only inappropriate, it was against the ruling of this commission’’.

The commission heard certain information before it closed yesterday, but Commissioner Margaret Cunneen ruled that the information be suppressed and withheld from any form of broadcast or publication until it could be further explored later today.

Mr Roser suggested that Mr Fox’s tweet was ‘‘another example of you not accepting authority and doing your own thing’’.

Mr Fox rejected the claim, saying his tweet did not identify any individual, but deleted the tweet several minutes after it was posted, on the advice of his own legal representative.

Mr Fox has been under heavy cross examination all morning from Mr Roser who again accused Mr Fox of lying to the commission and making efforts to undermine efforts by the police to investigate child abuse matters relating to the catholic church.

Mr Fox rejected the allegations.

The Special Commission of Inquiry is investigating the way in which police and the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Diocese handled allegations of child sexual abuse by former priests James Fletcher and Denis McAlinden.

The inquiry is now into its fourth day of hearings in Newcastle. The hearing will continue until next Friday before breaking, then resuming for a three-week hearing from June 24.
