A former priest has been charged with 34 counts of indecently assaulting children in the 1970s and 80s.

The man was extradited from the UK to stand trial for the offences in Ireland.

The man, who is in his 60s, appeared before Dublin District Court, where he was charged with 34 counts of indecent assault relating to eight boys and two girls.

The court heard the man was arrested at Dublin Airport today and brought to Bridewell Garda Station before appearing before the court.

He did not apply for bail and agreed to be remanded in custody to appear before the court again on 22 May.

He was granted legal aid and access to medical treatment for an ongoing health condition.

The Director of Public Prosecutions indicated to the court that the charges were such that the case should go forward for trial at a higher court.

Judge Hugh O'Donnell granted an order preventing the reporting of the man's name.
