Two top managers at the Vatican bank resigned on Monday, the Holy See said, in a shake-up that deepens uncertainty around the scandal-plagued institution.

Paolo Cipriani, the bank's managing director, and his deputy, Massimo Tulli, both stepped down, the Vatican said, saying the decision was "in the best interest of the Institute and the Holy See. "

Ernst von Freyberg—the recently appointed chairman of the Istituto per le Opere di Religione, or IOR, the official name of the Vatican bank—will take over management of the bank on an interim basis, the Vatican said.
