Archbishop Pledges to Back Inquiry into Scandal

The Archbishop-elect of St Andrews and Edinburgh has said he will back a Vatican inquiry into the sex scandal surrounding Cardinal Keith O’Brien, emphasising his determination “to sort this business out”.

Monsignor Leo Cushley, 52, a close adviser to Pope Francis, was speaking yesterday in Edinburgh, where he denied that he was a troubleshooter appointed by the Vatican to clean up the diocese. However, he pledged an open and transparent investigation into any allegations of impropriety against his predecessor.

With his 20-year career as a papal diplomat behind him, Mgr Cushley was able to deflect charges of cronyism and hypocrisy...
