Police are appealing for help with investigation into the allegations

A HIGHLAND police chief has issued an appeal to members of the public who may have been affected by sex abuse at a former school.

Allegations about historic abuse at the Fort Augustus Abbey School have hit the headlines in recent weeks following a BBC investigation.

Now, the Highland and Islands Division of Police Scotland is investigating the historic reports of alleged abuse from former pupils and is appealing for anyone affected to come forward.

The investigation followed a report in March 2013, by a former pupil of the Abbey, of sex abuse at the school during the 1980s.

Further reports have since been made and this investigation now extends to liaison with a number of law enforcement agencies across and outwith the UK.

Detective Chief Inspector Pamela Ross said: "Further individuals were identified as part of the investigation and following recent media coverage a further number of former pupils have come forward to speak to us.

"We understand that it must be very difficult to speak about such matters, but if anyone has any information about this case, they are encouraged to come forward and report this to Police.

"Any such reports will be directed to the enquiry team and investigated and dealt with very sensitively by trained officers.”

Anyone with information should contact Police by calling 101.
