Its former adviser on sexual abuse has accused the Roman Catholic Church of making Cardinal Keith O’Brien a scapegoat to divert attention from its failure to properly address the issue.

The accusation follows claims made by Mario Conti, the retired Archbishop of Glasgow, that Cardinal O’Brien had refused to co-operate with plans put forward by bishops to invite an independent researcher to compile a report on each of Scotland’s eight dioceses handling of sex abuse allegations. The report would have examined the conduct of Scotland’s bishops in dealing with sex abuse claims and be made public.
