A Northern Kentucky football coach has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a child.

Covington Police arrested Thomas Hansman, 27, a volunteer football coach at Holy Cross School on Wednesday. Hansman was charged with first-degree sexual abuse and using electronic communications to induce a minor to engage in sexual activity, both felonies.

Hansman volunteered with the middle school football team at Holy Cross School, said Tim Fitzgerald, Covington Diocese spokesman.

After the allegations arose, Hansman was immediately removed from his position, he said. Hansman had completed diocese’s safe environment program for all employees and volunteers, Fitzgerald said.

According to a police report, a 16-year-old student at the school said that Hansman sexually abused her. Hansman also sent her hundreds of text messages “enticing her to have sex,” the report states.

Hansman was released Friday on $5,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to appear in Kenton District Court on Wednesday.

The Diocese of Covington is asking that any other victims to contact Covington Police and/or the diocesan victims’ assistance coordinator, Margaret Schack at 859-392-1515.
