The Catholic Church has appointed a new Archbishop to the Canberra-Goulburn archdiocese after a 16 month vacancy.

Christopher Charles Prowse has been appointed after four years as the Bishop of Sale in Victoria.

He will take up his new role in November.

Bishop Prowse has pledged his full support to victims of sexual abuse within the church.

He says it is important the church recognises the trauma suffered by victims of institutional abuse.

"Wonderful brave people that have come forward and said that they have suffered at the hands of church personnel, it's an enormous tragedy, great drama of our time," he said.

"But when I sit down and speak to the victims, I listen to stories of great heroism and if we can help them in any shape or form that's our top priority."

Bishop Prowse says he is also determined to engage with Indigenous communities in the ACT region.

He says in his previous posts, the Catholic Church has a lot to offer Indigenous people, but often failed to reach them.

"Many attitudes were working well and truly against their betterment," he said.

"I became friends with many of them and in the end wrote quite a bit of work on it as part of my doctorate."

Bishop Prowse says there has been nothing unusual abut the length of time taken to fill the position in the archdiocese.

"There's always a consultation period going on, people asked of their opinion, and then of course there's been a change of Pontiffs in the meantime, maybe that slowed it down a little," he said.

"But in any rate, the position has been made and I'm absolutely delighted to be the new incoming Bishop."
