A FORMER priest made an eight-minute appearance in court on Friday on sex charges involving children.

Francis Cullen, 85, denied the allegations and was told he would stand trial at Derby Crown Court on March 24.

The timetable was approved by Judge Andrew Hamilton, who remanded Cullen in custody.

Cullen followed the hearing via a video link from Nottingham Prison, where he is being held.

He will be brought to the Derby court on December 20 where a bail application could be made.

He had been living in Tenerife and initially appeared before magistrates in Derby on August 31.

When asked if he was Cullen, the pensioner replied: "Si, yes - sorry, wrong language."

Robby Singh, for the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court the trial could last more than a week.

Kevin Waddingham, defending, did not apply for bail.

Cullen faces 27 charges relating to three boys aged between eight and 14.

The offences were allegedly committed between 1956 and 1991 in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

The charges are; 16 charges of indecent assault, 10 charges of gross indecency and one charge of an attempted sexual act.
