MIZZOU GRAD BILL EPPRIDGE DIES AT 75

Award-winning photojournalist and Mizzou grad Bill Eppridge is dead at 75 at his home in Danbury, Connecticut. He worked for Life magazine and captured memorable moments: a busboy leaning over the murdered Robert Kennedy; Woodstock music festival; Ku Klux Klan; Barbra Streisand on her way to stardom and the Beatles.

WALMART EMBRACES VETERANS

Walmart has embraced veterans, hiring 13,000 in the last few years with a goal of 100,000 more within five years. The company notes that 60 percent of American families live on 25 percent of the national income and the retailer is pushing through advertising the per person savings by shopping at Walmart.

REP. MIKE KELLEY ON OBAMACARE

In his latest newsletter, Rep. Mike Kelley, R-Lamar, MO., insists that Obamacare can be stopped, comparing it to slavery, Prohibition, and women not being allowed to vote. “The shutdown isn’t just about Obamacare it’s about the wasteful government spending that has gone on way too long,” notes Kelley.

NEIGHBORHOOD CHANGE IN THE ST. LOUIS REGION

Two local professors will attempt to answer the question of what explains neighborhood success. The oldest part of the St. Louis region have faced serious challenges in the last 40 years. Some neighborhoods have done better than others. Hank Webber of WashU and Todd Swanstrom of UMSL will present their findings on St. Louis neighborhoods that rebounded from decline. The “rebound communities” will be the subject of future UMSL. “What’s Brewing” breakfast forums that will take place in the neighborhoods with local activists telling their stories of neighborhood resilience will begin at 7:30 p.m.,Oct. 10 followed by a reception.
