Columbus Diocese Investigating Abuse Claim against Former Priest
October 8, 2013
Catholic Diocese investigators are looking into an accusation of sexual abuse against a retired priest. Diocese officials announced Tuesday that they are investigating Father Raymond Lavelle after a "credible" allegation of sexual abuse of a minor was reported to the Chancery Office in early September. The abuse allegedly occurred while Lavelle, 83, worked at St. Agnes Parish in Columbus from 1971 to 1980. The allegation was determined to be credible by the Diocese Review Board. Diocese analysts are now investigating Lavelle's activities during his long career in central Ohio, which began in 1957 and included tenures at several schools and churches. Lavelle retired from active ministry in 2000, according to the Diocese of Columbus. Anyone who would like to assist in the investigation is encouraged to contact the diocesan Victims Assistance Coordinator at 614-224-2251.
