A former youth leader at a Lander church, Zachary Fuhriman, faces a new charge of third degree sexual abuse of a minor.

In April, the 29-year-old was charged with sexual exploitation of children. That charge was dismissed by the Ninth District Court of Wyoming on October 3.

The new charge carries slightly stiffer penalties than original charge. Fuhriman is facing up to 15 years in prison if he is convicted of the crime. The previous charge was punishable by 5 to 12 years in prison and/or fines up to $10,000.

According to the new information filed, it is alleged that Fuhriman “knowingly took immodest, immoral or indecent liberties” with a 16-year-old female victim.

The affidavit filed in the case is the same as that filed with the original charge.

The victim, according to the affidavit, stated she knew Fuhriman for multiple years and that he was a youth counselor at the First Baptist Church. The church’s pastor, Scott Engelhart, said in a phone interview earlier this year that Fuhriman has not been associated with the church for a number of years.

The affidavit uses testimony from the victim and details four instances of sex between the two that occurred between December 2012 and February 2013. “On March 20, 2013, Detectives Zerga and Lutterman conducted a taped interview with Fuhriman referencing the sexual assault on (the victim),” states the affidavit. “Fuhriman admitted to the four above-mentioned instances of sexual intercourse with (the victim).”

Fuhriman has waived his right for a speedy arraignment. Future hearing dates in the case have not yet been set.
