Sydney Archbishop Cardinal George Pell holds a document to the response of the archidiocese to sexual abuse during a press conference in Sydney on November 13, 2012.

The sexual abuse of young children by parish priests employed to take them into their pastoral care was something many people once considered inconceivable. The Catholic Church in Australia has been engulfed in this scandal, but it wasn't until members of Victoria's police refused to continue to stand back and let the Church deal with their paedophile priests that this ticking bomb was unleashed. Now there are at least two state parliamentary inquiries and a Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Cardinal George Pell has played a key role in the greatest challenge to face his church for centuries, and David Marr has investigated the man and his career, and his response to the issue of paedophile priests.
