MORE than half of the Magdalene Laundries survivors will get more than €50,000 in compensation.

Almost 700 survivors of the Magdalene Laundries have applied for compensation under the scheme being headed up by Mr Justice John Quirke. Based on the information provided so far, 55pc of applicants will receive more than €50,000 each. The cost of the scheme is expected to be €59m.

NEW NAVAL DEPUTY

A high-ranking Naval officer who received a medal for his efforts in detaining a drug-smuggling yacht has been named Deputy Chief of Staff (Support) of the Defence Forces.

Commodore Mark Mellett, a married father of four from Co Mayo, was appointed to the post following cabinet approval. Cmd Mellett received a Distinguished Service Medal in 1994 for his efforts in detaining the drug-smuggling yacht 'Brime' in 1993, when he was captain of LE Orla.

FREE CUPS TO CUT WASTE

MONAGHAN County Council is providing free cups to 'dashboard dining' motorists in an effort to reduce the 15,000 disposable coffee and tea cups that are dumped in the county every year.

The 270ml cups carry the message, 'Prevent Waste – Refill Me,' and are being provided free of charge from coffee shops.

EXAMINER AT PUB FIRMS

AN interim examiner has been appointed to a group of companies which own and operate a well-known pub in Dublin city centre.

The application was made just hours after the High Court – in a separate judgment – cleared the way for receivers to be appointed over companies controlling Flannery's on Dublin's Camden Street. Yesterday, Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan said she was satisfied to appoint Neil Hughes as interim examiner to Camden Taverns Ltd and related firms, Camden Street Properties Ltd and Camden Street Investments Ltd, which own and operate the pub.

SMUGGLER AVOIDS JAIL

A DANISH citizen who tried to smuggle more than €28,000 worth of cigarettes and tobacco into Dublin Airport has avoided jail.

Ahmad Nayef Fahood Taran Jaser El-Enazi (40) pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to evading excise duty on tobacco products on August 6, 2013. Revenue officials seized 20,400 cigarettes and 57.5kg of tobacco from El-Enazi's luggage. The judge gave him a two-year suspended sentence on condition he leave the country.
