Yesterday, before the Super Bowl, Lorraine and I watched Basta (Enough in Italian), a documentary by clergy abuse survivor Gary Bergeron.  The film chronicles the Don Quixote quest of three clergy sexual abuse survivors—Gary, fellow survivor Bernie McDade, and Gary’s father Eddie Bergeron—to meet John Paul II face to face in search of help in arresting the cancer of clergy sexual abuse of children. Gary, Bernie, and Eddie get the Vatican version of three-card Monte, but never get to see the pope. However, the three men from New England meet people more important than the pope: fellow survivors of clergy sexual abuse from all over the world. Instead of a meeting with the pope, Gary discovers that success isn’t always defined by achieving a goal. Sometimes it’s defined by the attempt itself. And sometimes, in that attempt, you also find out who you are.

Gary Bergeron brings his marvelous communication skills and marketing talent to Basta.

I give Basta four stars.

Anything that tells the story of this form of human suffering at the hands of those who were most trusted in society…needs to come out. Not that we are pain freaks and get off on the misfortune of others, but that it allows us to be in their shoes for a little while soas to understand the complete experience and to do everything necessary to have this not happen to any other. We know that everyone in the ranks is not an abuser or an enabler but those who are, are greater than Basta’s….
