New Bethany Home for Girls near Arcadia, La., was open from the early 1970s until its closure in 2001. It was a boarding school founded by Mack Ford, a preacher who identified himself as an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist. Over the years, Ford fought attempts by state and local agencies to investigate fire code compliance and claims of child abuse at the home.
