THE historian who uncovered a mass grave of children at a home for unmarried mothers in the west of Ireland believes that three of the mothers were also interred there with their babies.

The research by Catherine Corless into babies’ bodies buried in the grounds of the former St Mary’s mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway, made international headlines last week and sparked calls for an investigation.

Corless, a local historian, has now established that nine female adults were also buried in the grave.

In three cases she has been able to identify them as mothers after matching the women’s addresses on their death certificates with the addresses of children found there.

She has so far been unable to identify the six other women.
