MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

A chaplain at MUSC has been placed on leave without pay following his recent arrest for several alleged sexual encounters with a 17-year-old boy, according to officials.

Mt. Pleasant Police arrested 40-year-old-Gerig Huggins Tuesday and charged him with unlawful conduct toward a child.

According to court papers, Chaplain Huggins exposed himself to and touched his accuser’s private parts on several occasions at a home in Mt. Pleasant.

According to a statement from MUSC, Huggins "has been placed on leave without pay pending the outcome of the police investigation and our internal investigation."

During his bond hearing Wednesday, Huggins told Judge Linda Lombard he had a recent tragedy in his family.

"My wife just passed away, she committed suicide last week. My sons have paid for the funeral at this point, but I have to reimburse them,” Huggins told magistrate Lombard.

Huggins also told the judge he recently was removed from the church where he was a pastor.

His bond was set at $50,000.
