A religion teacher at Seton Keough High School has been fired after a former student alleged that she had been sexually abused by the teacher in the mid-1980s, the Archdiocese of Baltimore said Friday.
The archdiocese identified her as Helene Murtha, 58.
Attempts to reach Murtha were unsuccessful. She has not been charged in the incidents, according to online court records.
The allegations were forwarded to the Baltimore city and county police departments, archdiocesan spokesman Sean Caine said.
"We investigated it, and the suspect was not charged, based on the victim's wishes," said a Baltimore County police spokesman, Lt. Robert McCullough.
City police did not return calls for comment.
Caine said the former student contacted the archdiocese this week, and officials then spoke with Murtha. A letter has been sent to the families of current students to alert them to the allegations.
The archdiocese urged anyone with information about any child sexual abuse to contact police and, if it allegedly involves church personnel, to call the archdiocese's youth protection hot line at 866-417-7469.
The allegations date to when Murtha taught at the Archbishop Keough High School, an all-girls Catholic school, which she joined in 1977.
The school merged with Seton High School in 1987 to become Seton Keough, and Murtha remained at the school until 1992.
She moved to what was then the College of Notre Dame as associate dean for student life before returning to Seton Keough, first as a substitute teacher and then, beginning in 2011, as a full-time religion teacher and member of the school's Campus Ministry Team.
