A priest who worked in Stephenville has pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault dating back to the mid-1980s.

Gary Gerald Hoskins, 56, entered pleas in Corner Brook Supreme Court on Monday.

The charges stem from incidents which are alleged to have taken place some time between Jan. 1, 1984 and Dec. 31, 1986.

According to a letter from the Corner Brook and Labrador Diocese released in Sept., Hoskins left the ministry in the former Diocese of St. George's in 1988 and has not worked as a priest since 1995.

"It would be inappropriate for Diocesan officials to comment on the specifics of this case as it is currently before the court," the letter read.

"However, we must be clear in stating that any form of misconduct by personnel of the Catholic Church is unacceptable."

Court documents list Hoskin's current address as Mississauga, Ontario.

He is expected back in court in 2015.
