Arabbi from Ohio charged with sexually abusing a girl in Baltimore County was extradited to Maryland and held on $5 million bail Wednesday, Baltimore County police said.

Prosecutors said Frederick Martin Karp, 50, would on occasion visit a Baltimore County family who he was friends with between July 4, 2009 and December 10, 2014. During those visits, prosecutors said he would sexually assault the girl.

Karp, of the Cleveland suburb of Beachwood, was arrested last week at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Karp identified himself to police as the rabbi at Menorah Park senior living center in Beachwood, prosecutors said. Karp is also president of the Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains.

County police said previously that their investigation has not indicated that there were any incidents of abuse at Jewish facilities in the area.

County police first received information on Dec. 31 that he had abused the girl, went to Cleveland and obtained an arrest warrant charging him with second- and third-degree sex offense, perverted practice and sexual abuse of a minor.

When they came back to Karp's home, he was gone; he was arrested Jan. 15 at JFK.

Karp had his first hearing Wednesday and is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center with bail set at $5 million. No attorney was listed for him in online court records.

He has a bail hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday before a judge in Towson District Court.
