U.S. officials substantially underestimated the effect of smoking has on public health. And smokers, particularly those on Medicaid, don’t get enough help to quit. So says Dr. Graham Colditz of the WashU School of Medicine. He cites a new study that adds at least five diseases and 60,000 deaths a year to the toll taken by tobacco in America. “Before the study, smoking was already blamed for nearly half a million deaths a year in this country,” he said. He added that smoking was linked to ailments not previously attributed to tobacco. . .March 19: National Public Radio’s award-winning host Michel Martin speaks about Ferguson and the news media at a “First Amendment Celebration,” benefitting the St. Louis Journalism Review. . .Perusing the varied Valentine’s Day offerings at local restaurants and pubs, one odd offering leaps out, specialty chocolates from the decidedly down scale Crown Candy Kitchen and desserts from Dogtown’s Sugaree Baking Company are being offered at the decidedly up scale 3500 Winehaus on Watson in south St. Louis. . .Rabbi Sam Goldman gave the invocation at a recent celebration for Belleville’s Fr. Roger Karbin who is celebrating his 50th year as a priest. People from 28 states and three countries signed a “congrats” card to the cleric. In the crowd were Marg Beckmann and Marybeth Petermeyer who have attended Karbin’s scripture class for 40 years. . .Webster Groves library may opt out of its 12 year-old reciprocal lending agreement with the St. Louis County library. (U. City, Rock Hill and Kirkwood libraries also belong to it.) The issue? The 25 cents that is charged to Webster library when a Webster resident checks out a book from the county system.

MEANWHILE, Glendale and Rock Hill officials are pondering the sharing of fire department services.

THE MINNEAPOLIS ARCHDIOCESE is re-opening a child sex abuse investigation into Fr. William Stolzman,who was at SLU for four years. This is according to the archdiocesan spokeswoman, ex-KMOV reporter Ann Steffens.

And inside the publication, Dylan had this to say about our town’s Chuck Berry: “It’s very hard to do what he does. And if you see him in person, it’s hard for him to even do it.”

Jay Nixon’s office in reaction to judgment in Normandy student transfer lawsuit: “The ruling on Normandy’s accreditation reinforces the importance of the General Assembly’s continued urgency on legislative solution to student transfers this session.
