Mgr Charles Scicluna has been officially named as Malta’s new Archbishop by Pope Francis.

Mgr Scicluna has replaced Mgr Paul Cremona, who resigned in October. Mgr Scicluna has been acting as apostolic administrator since the resignation.

In his first words as the new leader of the Church in Malta, Mgr Scicluna said that he would like to be an example to everyone with his deeds and duties, in the hope that others will follow

We should open our hearts to people who knock at our doors and come to our shores, he said. “I want to pass on a message of hope and courage; we should not destroy what we have with the poison of fear and hatred”.

The Curia needs restructuring, and he did not exclude removing people from the administration if it so warranted. The Church has registered financial losses every year and this matter needs to be addressed.

He said he received the news from the Nuncio on Sunday evening, and he felt an inner peace which he would have like to continue in the following night, he said with a smile.

The Church's challenge to to reach out with a message that is valid today.

He said that he will not be requesting the appointment of an auxiliary bishop tomorrow or the next day. This decision must take its time, he said.

"Charles Sicluna has been appointed Archbishop, and Malta will get Charles Scicluna, not a photocopy," he said.

He said he will continue to live with his parents in Lija and will use the official residences in Attard and Mdina for official meetings.

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca was the first to congratulate Mgr Scicluna for his appointment.

As soon as the press conference ended, Mgr Charles Scicluna went into the Curia chapel to pray.
