The late firebrand MP Enoch Powell today became the latest political figure accused of involvement in the alleged Westminster paedophile network.

The Tory, notorious for his ‘rivers of blood’ speech in Birmingham, is at the centre of allegations passed to Scotland Yard by a senior Anglican bishop.

A clergyman is said to have come forward with claims of satanic abuse made by a young adult he counselled in the 1980s.

A member of the Church of England’s safeguarding team then passed the former Wolverhampton West MP’s name to police on the instruction of Bishop Paul Butler.

A spokesman for the church said: “When allegations are made against individuals, it is quite proper to pass those allegations to the police and statutory authorities, without any investigation on our part and regardless of our own views.”

The allegations of child abuse were reported to have emerged when the vicar counselled the young adult several decades ago.

The church authorities have forwarded the information despite reportedly having no solid evidence to support the claims.

Though allegations of Satanic abuse were rife in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a Government inquiry failed to secure any convictions.

Simon Heffer, the Conservative and Ulster Unionist MP’s official biographer, told a national newspaper that the allegations were “absolute nonsense”.

He said: “The Church has publicly accused Enoch of being involved in ritual satanic abuse on hearsay, without the slightest evidence. They might as well accuse him of having been a war criminal or an armed robber, for there would be as much truth in either allegation.”

The Met has a number of continuing inquiries taking place into the alleged Westminster paedophile network.

Claims that officers ditched inquiries into powerful figures are also being looked at by the Independent Police Complaints Commission

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We do not identify individuals that are subject of investigation.”

Powell was born in Stechford and attended King Edward’s School in Edgbaston.

The powerful orator delivered his infamous anti-immigration speech to the General Meeting of the West Midlands Area Conservative Political Centre on April 20, 1968.

It led to the Wolverhampton West MP’s dismissal from the Shadow Cabinet by Tory Leader Ted Heath.

He died aged 85 in 1998.
