Sunday, June 21: Father’s Day, when sales for gifts in the U.S. are expected to hit $12.5 billion and the average person will shell out $115. Father’s Day gift sales are a blip to other gift-giving holidays. F.Y.I.:The celebration of fathers and fatherhood may be traced to the ruins of Babylon. With sometimes great gusto, children are shopping for the unusual. (Forget the set of BBQ equipment, tickets to sporting events, imprinted t-shirts, mugs and best-dad trophies.) Why not go heart-to-heart by picking up the tab for a preventative heart attack test that can save his life?

SIDEWALK OUTSIDE THE CONFERENCE OF BISHOPS AT THE HYATT REGENCY

SNAP members chided Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon because one of his priests argued to a judge that a convicted sex offender should get no jail time. And Carol Kuhnert hawked her new book, “No Longer on Pedestals.” She’s a south county grandmother who comforted victims of her brother, Fr. Norman Christian, who molested kids in Affton, Normandy, Woodson Terrace and the city. (Despite the accusations, lawsuits and settlements, the Archbishop Raymond Burke gave Christian a burial with full priestly honors.)

AND KUDOS TO THE GREY LADY

Only The New York Times pointed out that the church’s abuse scandal that erupted on the national scene 30 years ago (when a Louisiana pedophile priest garnered national headlines for assaulting dozens of kids) versus the more common but false narrative that “it all began in Boston in 2002.” And the Times noted that a spokesman yesterday at the conference was Vermont Bishop Christopher Coyne who spent years as a flak for Boston’s disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law.

SHORT TAKES

FIFA has delayed the bidding process for the 2026 World Cup due to the bribery scandal. The U.S., Mexico, Colombia and others have expressed interest in hosting. The tournaments will be played in Russia and Qatar in 2018 and 2022 respectively. . .Kudos to John Kijowski for getting braids as chairman of the board of directors of the Missouri Broadcasters Association. He happens to be Hubbard Radio’s St. Louis veep and market manager. . .Affable Edward Jones YMCA sales chief Lisa Busekist will say “I do” on July 17 to Menlo’s Brad Goertzen followed by a honeymoon in Mackinaw Island, MI.
