Archbishop John Nienstedt Resigns

Archbishop John Nienstedt has resigned from the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Nienstedt says he submitted his resignation as archbishop to Pope Francis and has received word that he has accepted it. Nienstedt has faced growing calls to step down in the wake of recent sexual abuse cases. Criminal charges were announced against the archdiocese earlier this month. "I leave with a clear conscience knowing that my team and I have put in place solid protocols to ensure the protection of minors and vulnerable adults," Nienstedt said in a statement. "I ask for continued prayers for the well-being of this Archdiocese and its future leaders. I also ask for your continued prayers for me." Auxiliary Bishop Lee Anthony Piche has also resigned.
