Only one in seven of those polled believes that the Vatican and bishops are actually intervening in solving a problem that has crippled the church in recent years, according to a survey conducted by the SW Research pollster for Newsweek Polska weekly. Poles aged between 35 and 40 (i.e. people who could have school age children) tend to be most supportive of harsher sentences for paedophiles within the church. In this group, 80.4 percent believes that church leaders are too lenient with the problem of child abuse. Only eight percent of the respondents in this age group is of the opinion that the actions of the Vatican and Polish bishops are adequate. (rg)
