Polish Priest Charged with Rape of Minor

The charges brought against Father Adam W. (surname withheld under Polish privacy laws) follow an investigation that was launched on 11 August by the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Jedrzejow, southern Poland.

The 45-year-old had served as vicar of a parish near Jedrzejow, but he resigned last week.

He stands accused of raping a girl below the age of 15, and he has also been charged with two other counts of sexual abuse.

The alleged offences took place between September 2013 and February 2015.

A court in Kielce, southern Poland, has ruled that the suspect should be initially kept in custody for three months.

It has not been disclosed whether the defendant has confessed to the alleged crimes.

If found guilty, he could serve up to 12 years behind bars. (nh)
