The trial of a priest for alleged indecent assault at Rockwell College near Cashel in Co Tipperary in the 1980s has heard more evidence from his alleged victim.

Fr Henry Moloney, 77, who lives in Dublin, worked as a music teacher in the Co Tipperary secondary school at the time of the alleged assaults.

He has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of indecent assault against a student over 30 years ago.

Fr Moloney denies the eight charges which relate to allegations of indecent assault in the early 1980s.

Seven of the charges relate to alleged incidents at Rockwell College and the other relates to an allegation of indecent assault in an area close to the complainant's home.

The trial before a jury started yesterday before Judge Thomas Teehan and continued today.

The alleged injured party has told Clonmel Circuit Court the abuse started within a week or two of the beginning of the school year, after Fr Moloney asked him to join the choir.

The accused first started talking to him and befriending him.

Fr Moloney was the choirmaster and played the organ in the school's chapel and the first incident was in the organ gallery, the complainant told the court.

The court heard that the accused told his alleged victim not to tell any of the other priests or teachers in the school.

The man says he remembers on a particular St Stephen's Day at his home: "Fr Moloney suddenly standing there in the kitchen" and feeling upset as a result.

"Any notion I had about home being a safe haven for me, never was again anyway."

His parents asked him to show Fr Moloney, who was "a keen photographer," some of the local sights and at one of the places they visited the accused molested him, he said.

In cross examination today, the complainant said that it was untrue to suggest the assaults had not happened.

The trial continues.
