The former youth minister of a Danville church was indicted Monday by a Boyle County grand jury on seven felony counts related to illegal sexual activities with minors.

Bobby Cassady, 28, of 515 Tenikat St., was charged with three counts of first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, promoting a sexual performance by a minor and possession of material portraying a sexual performance by a minor.

Cassady's bond was set at $50,000. Danville Detective Robert Ladd testified before the grand jury.

Cassady's attorney, Ephraim Helton, declined to comment on the indictment Tuesday.

One of the unlawful transaction charges involves engaging a minor less than 16 years old in illegal sexual activity between February and May of 2011. That charge is a Class B felony, carrying a prison sentence between 10 and 20 years upon conviction.

The other two unlawful transaction charges are Class C felonies and occurred on Oct. 25 of this year, when Cassady allegedly induced a minor less than 18 years old to send him a sexually explicit video.

Cassady also allegedly directed and possessed that same video.

According to the indictment, the sexual abuse charges date back to 2011, when Cassady used "his position of authority or special trust to subject a minor less than 18 years of age, with whom he came into contact with as a result of that position, to sexual contact."

Cassady had served as youth minister at Gethsemane Baptist Church and was also a leader in the local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He volunteered with high school football teams and was a substitute bus driver for Danville schools.

The indictment does not indicate which position of authority or trust Cassady allegedly abused to entice the male juveniles into sexual situations.

Danville police said an investigation into Cassady began after 17-year-old male came forward with allegations that he had sent a sexually explicit video to Cassady at Cassady's request. Another male also reported that he had sexual contact with Cassady when he was 15 years old, police said.
