L.A. Film Critics name ‘Spotlight’ best of 2015

The journalistic procedural drama “Spotlight” won best picture at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s 2015 movie awards voting Sunday.

The film about The Boston Globe’s investigation of the Catholic Archdiocese’s pedophile priest cover-up also nabbed an award for Josh Singer and director Tom McCarthy’s screenplay.

The motorized dystopian fantasy “Mad Max: Fury Road” took the most prizes from the local critics group, winning best director (George Miller), cinematography (John Seale) and production design (Colin Gibson), as well as the runner-up slots for best picture and film editing.

LAFCA’s best actor award went to Michael Fassbender for his title role as Apple icon “Steve Jobs.” Charlotte Rampling took best actress honors for her part in the marital drama “45 Years.” Michael Shannon’s scathing portrayal of a real estate schemer in “99 Homes” won best supporting actor. And Alicia Vikander nailed best supporting actress for playing “Ex Machina’s” seductive cyborg.

The group’s foreign language film award went to the harrowing Hungarian Holocaust drama “Son of Saul.” “Anomalisa,” a sensitively psychoseuxal puppet show written and co-directed by “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’s” Charlie Kaufman, won in the animation category. The Amy Winehouse music bio “Amy” topped the documentary competition.

Composer Carter Burwell won for his “Anomalisa” and “Carol” music scores. The film editing gong went to “The Big Short’s” Hank Corwin.

Creed” director and co-writer Ryan Coogler was named LAFCA’s new generation talent of 2015. Veteran film editor Anne V. Coates, whose credits range from “Lawrence of Arabia” to “Fifty Shades of Grey,” was designated this year’s career achievement award winner in October. A special citation also was approved for film preservationist David Shepard.

Forty-three members of the critics group, which is composed of print, radio and online movie reviewers based in Southern California, attended Sunday’s awards voting in Cheviot Hills. Awards will be presented to winners on Jan. 9 at the InterContinental Hotel in Century City.

Other runners-up this year include “Carol” director Todd Haynes, cinematographer Ed Lachman and production designer Judy Becker; “Son of Saul” lead actor Géza Röhrig; “Brooklyn” lead actress Saoirse Ronan; supporting actress Kristen Stewart (“Clouds of Sils Maria”); supporting actor Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”); composer Ennio Morricone (“The Hateful Eight”); and Kaufman for his “Anomalisa” screenplay.

Among second-placing films were “Inside Out” (animation), “The Look of Silence” (documentary) and “The Tribe,” a movie told entirely in Ukrainian sign language (foreign).
