A CABAL of Catholic police officers and then chief commissioner protected a paedophile priest from prosecution in the 1970s, according to explosive evidence before the Royal Commission.

Former Chief Commissioner Mick Miller said he believed his predecessor Reginald Jackson helped thwart an investigation in to Mildura paedophile Monsignor John Day.

Day was investigated by former Detective Denis Ryan, but he was taken off the case and the case buried.

Ryan resigned in disgust in 1972 and today broke down as he wondered how many children were abused by Day as a result of police inaction.

Mr Miller today told the Child Abuse Royal Commission that Ryan was owed an apology and compensation from Victoria Police, and that he was disgusted by the cover-up.

“In my opinion this points to Reg Jackson as the only one who could have produced the achieved outcome (to end the investigation),” Mr Miller said.
