Donnie Ray Schultz is a self-employed repairman by trade, but in his spare time, he used to volunteer as a religious teacher at an Oklahoma church.

As KFOR News reports, the 45-year-old was arrested outside his home December 18 for a crime that has since stunned the church community.

A Calvary Christian Church spokesperson tells the Oklahoman they’re in utter shock:

“While (Schultz) led a small group Bible study on church doctrine, he was one of seven members who took turns teaching the class. The class was for adults only, but apparently some participated in the class before they were eighteen. (He) was never in any paid, employee relationship with the church. He (led) the discipleship class as a volunteer.”

The victim – a teen – told investigators that Schultz would sometimes record their time together on his computer and cell phone.

Schultz’s list of charges is staggering:

19 counts of second-degree rape

31 counts of forcible oral sodomy

One count of manufacturing child pornography

One count of possession of obscene material involving the participation of a minor

Engaging in a patter of criminal offenses in two or more counties

While the charges might seem incredible for a man who’s married and has a kid, those who knew Schultz’s past might not be as surprised.

Over 20 years ago, he was convicted of second-degree rape, but he didn’t have to register as a sex offender after 2013. Apparently the church knew about Schultz’s past, but they were told he could be trusted and allowed him to join as a teacher.

Slate recently shared this map comparing the minimum registration requirement for sex offenders in each state, which may vary if an offender seeks removal after a shorter period of time:

According to the National Sex Offender Public Registry, nearly 2 million adolescents in the U.S. have been the victims of sexual assault — 82 percent of whom are female.

While Schultz currently sits in the county jail on a $500,000 bond, police are working to see if another victim may have been involved, after finding the girl’s photo at his home.
