An Anglican priest has been arrested at his Coquitlam home on sex assault allegations stemming from his work in an Edmonton youth jail in the 1980s.

Police say Gordon William Dominey, 63, is accused of sexually assaulting five youths when he worked at the Edmonton Youth Development Centre between 1985 and 1989.

Dominey was arrested on Thursday. He faces five charges of sexual assault and five charges of gross indecency.

Investigators began looking into the allegations in September 2015. That is roughly the time Dominey began working at St. Catherine’s Capilano in North Vancouver, according to the church’s website.

Church staff could not be reached for comment Saturday, but a voice message still referred to Dominey as St. Catherine’s reverend. In a message online, Bishop Melissa Skelton of the Diocese of New Westminster offered support to Dominey, who has been placed on administrative leave pursuant to Diocese policy.

“I am offering ongoing pastoral care and support to Gordon in what must be a very difficult time for him,” Skelton wrote in a message on Saturday.

“He is entitled to a presumption of innocence and I ask for your prayers for Gordon, for all those who are involved in this legal process and for those bringing forth the allegations against him.”

A court date for Dominey has not been set yet.
