Dennis C. Theurer of Belleville, charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault of a victim younger than 13. Charged Feb. 3, 2016, in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Dennis C. Theurer of Forest Avenue has been accused of sexually assaulting two girls in his home, police said Friday.

Theurer, 66, was longtime leader of a youth singing group at a church in Fairview Heights, but police and the pastor said the allegations are unrelated to his church work.

Theurer faces eight felony counts, six of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and two of criminal sexual assault of a victim younger than 13. Court documents show the alleged victims are 7 and 13 years old. He is accused of offenses that occurred from 2013 until this year.

Belleville detective Sgt. Mark Heffernan said police believe the offenses occurred at Theurer's home in the 700 block of Forest. Heffernan said they were not related to his involvement at Edgemont Bible Church, where he was an elder and a leader of a youth singing group.

The Rev. Douglas White, pastor of the church at 5100 North Illinois Street, said Theurer has resigned from the congregation of about 250 members. Edgemont also operates a school on its campus.

"We are really grieving over this," White said. "We're hurting for the families involved. I have known this man for 30 years and never suspected anything like this. We pray for him."

Heffernan said Theurer was arrested Monday. St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly's office filed the charges Wednesday, when bail was set at $200,000.
