The Feb. 9, 2016, police mugshot of John B. Feit, who was indicted by a Hidalgo County grand jury for the 1960 murder of Irene Garza.

The man suspected of killing a McAllen woman more than 50 years ago was arrested Tuesday.

John Feit, a former priest with Sacred Heart Catholic Church, was arrested by the Texas Rangers, Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office investigators and McAllen police in Arizona on Tuesday. He was never charged with killing 25-year-old beauty queen Irene Garza in 1960, but was widely accused of the crime.

District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez confirmed late Tuesday his office presented the case to the grand jury last Thursday, and it came back with a true bill.

“We had kept it quiet as much as we could — we sealed the indictment,” he said.

Rodriguez said the next step is to see whether or not Feit will contest his extradition to Texas or waive it.

“We would have to get a governor’s warrant. It usually happens even if it’s contested,” Rodriguez said.

Former Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra came under fire when the case was reopened and went to an Hidalgo County grand jury in 2004, but the grand jury failed to indict Feit.

Guerra declined comment Tuesday.

“I don’t want to undermine the state’s case or that of the defense as it stands now,” Guerra said.

When current DA Ricardo Rodriguez beat out the incumbent in March 2014, Guerra challenged him to finally solve the case. Garza’s family also asked Rodriguez to pursue it.

Rodriguez enjoyed the family’s support during his bid for district attorney, saying he’d re-examine the 1960 murder case to see whether it should again be taken before a grand jury.

He did not make any promises to solve it, however.

Rodriguez was asked about the Garza case during his campaign and the issue into the woman’s murder was seen largely as the reason he was able to beat longtime DA Guerra.

Rodriguez denies he ran his campaign promising anything other than to say he would look into the cold case.

“It came up during the campaign, and I said we would take a look at it,” Rodriguez said.

Asked if new evidence was presented that resulted in the true bill, Rodriguez would not say.

“We left it in the hands of the grand jury, and they came back with a true bill,” Rodriguez said. “At this point, we’re not saying anything more since the case is still open.”

Maricopa County Sheriff’s office spokesman Deputy Joaquin Enriquez confirmed Tuesday night the department assisted the Texas Rangers and the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s investigators in Feit’s arrest.

As of 7:45 p.m., Feit had not been booked into the Maricopa County jail, Enriquez said.

McAllen police investigators joined the Texas Department of Public Safety Ranger Service during Tuesday’s arrest. Texas Rangers have been working side-by-side with police investigators since the homicide investigation was first opened in 1960, Chief Victor Rodriguez said.

“The arrest itself was uneventful,” Chief Rodriguez said. “They have done some initial processing and some initial interviews this afternoon and arraignment will take place (Wednesday) morning.”

Rodriguez said they will have an idea after Feit is formally charged if they can acquire a waiver of extradition to transport him to Hidalgo County as soon as this week or if they must go through the regular extradition process, which could take longer, the chief said.

“There is no question in my mind that he will face a Hidalgo County jury for trial in this matter,” Chief Rodriguez said. “At some point in time once we have him in Hidalgo County we will address the press but not until we have him here.”
