A former priest, suspected in the murder of a second grade teacher decades ago, was volunteering at Sacred Heart Church in McAllen at the time.

The church is now part of the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville.

The relations director at the diocese said when a criminal case is presented with the church their duty is to immediately report it to the authorities.

Currently they do not have an open investigation concerning Irene Garza’s case. They sent CHANNEL 5 NEWS the following statement regarding the case:

“We hope and pray for healing for the family and everyone involved. It is our hope that justice is served in this case that dates back to 1960.”

The church does deal with allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment exploitation and abuse among others. The diocese goes by guidelines and procedures known as Ethical and Responsible Conduct in Ministry.

The guidelines dictate norms of conduct. They apply to employees, including religious staff and volunteers. Within the guidelines, people can find how to report any suspicious behavior and how to report any sort of allegations.

The diocese also explained the investigative procedure they will take after an allegation is made, and the disciplinary steps that could be taken.
