"The Holy Father decisively reiterates his invitation for you to live a life of privacy in repentance and prayer"

WARSAW (ChurchMilitant.com) - The Vatican is warning disgraced archbishop Juliusz Paetz to avoid participating in Poland's public celebrations.

Archbishop Paetz resigned in 2002 after multiple seminarians accused him of sexually molesting them. He was subsequently ordered by the Vatican to live a private life of prayer and penance.

The former archbishop of Poznan was scheduled to participate at public Mass this week as Poland celebrates its 1,050th anniversary as a Christian nation. Archbishop Paetz told reporters in Poznan that he saw "no reason" he couldn't participate in their celebrations from April 14–16.

But yesterday, the Apostolic Nuncio to Poland, Abp. Celestino Migliore of Warsaw, contacted the archbishop reminding him of the "instruction he received ... to refrain from participating in public celebrations."

Rading a prepared letter, Abp. Migliore noted,

The Holy Father decisively reiterates his invitation for you to live a life of privacy in repentance and prayer. Media news about your participation in official celebrations of the anniversary of Poland's baptism has created a new situation of unnecessary and harmful commotion for the church in Poland and the Holy See. It blatantly contradicts the instructions given you.

The press office for the Polish bishops' conference confirmed the Vatican had warned Abp. Paetz in 2013 to "refrain from participating in public celebrations." The conference spokesman added that it was "hard to imagine" that Abp. Paetz would ignore this command in July when the Pope visits Poland for World Youth Day in Krakow.

Father Darius Oko, a priest of the archdiocese of Krakow, has written extensively about what he calls a "huge homosexual underground in the Church."

Concerning Abp. Paetz, Oko relates,

I learned about Bishop Paetz by accident, from a seminarian who told me, all trembling from emotions and terror, about his having been molested by his own ordinary. He was at the brink of losing faith, as well as mental and spiritual integrity.

Father Oko confirms that in attempting to uncover Abp. Paetz's alleged abuse of seminarians, "we encountered a wall that could not be overcome, even in a case as self-evident as that."

Speaking further of his interventions in this regard from the year 2000–2002, Fr. Oko adds, "What finally broke through the wall was a tremendous commotion in the media and reaching the Pope himself. Otherwise, everything was blocked at lower levels of local or Vatican hierarchy."

Archbishop Paetz resigned only after the newspaper Rzeczpospolita published allegations of his past sexual abuse of seminarians.
