KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police on Monday (Jun 6) said they were focusing on rehabilitating the victims of British paedophile Richard Huckle and generating community awareness in the wake of revelations he sexually abused dozens of Malaysian children.

Huckle was only caught after an investigation by British authorities who monitored his online activities, which included prolifically uploading indecent images to paedophilia forums.

Huckle was arrested in December 2014 when he returned to Britain to spend Christmas. He has pleaded guilty to 71 counts of child sex offences.

However, Ong Chin Lan, assistant director at the Royal Malaysian police's sexual, women and child investigation division, told Channel NewsAsia they would not be recording testimonies from victims.

"The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has enough images," she said. "What we are doing is rehabilitating victims (if found) and awareness of community.”

Last week, Assistant Commission Ong had told local newswire Bernama that Malaysian police were trying to obtain information from their UK counterparts about the abuse that reportedly happened in impoverished communities in Kuala Lumpur.

“We have asked for the information repeatedly and will continue to press them for more information for follow-up action,” she was quoted as saying. “So far, the victims have not been identified as the NCA only informed us about the incident about one month ago.”

When Channel NewsAsia enquired if Malaysian police now have access to investigation information, Ms Ong declined to comment.

Local media have identified a church which Richard Huckle had visited during his time in Malaysia. Huckle had reportedly posed as a Christian philanthropist and English teacher to gain access to children.

"We won't carry out any investigation on any community in Malaysia since he has been charged," said Ms Ong, when asked if the church would be investigated.

Huckle, 30, who will be sentenced on Monday by a London court on 91 charges including the rape or sexual assault of children as young as six months, committed his crimes during his several years living in Malaysia.
