Walter "Robby" Robinson is the Boston Globe editor who led the Pulitzer Prize-winning Spotlight reporting team.

The Boston Globe editor who led the investigations team portrayed in the Academy Award-winning movie "Spotlight" is coming to Arizona State University to teach.

Walter "Robby" Robinson will be a visiting professor, beginning in January, ASU officials announced this week. He will teach an investigative-journalism class at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and work with Cronkite News reporters.

The four-person Spotlight team revealed the long cover-up of clergy sex abuse by Boston's Roman Catholic archdiocese. The team's first story, in 2002, was followed by hundreds more and led other journalists to unearth similar allegations around the world.

The Spotlight team won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for its investigation.

Actor Michael Keaton portrayed Robinson in the 2015 movie, which won Academy Awards for best picture and best writing, original screenplay. Critics lauded the movie for its realistic portrayal of the tedious work involved in investigative journalism and the often-casual style of journalists' dress.

Robinson's appointment is the latest in a series of high-profile hires by the Cronkite School.

Other notables include Leonard Downie Jr., former executive editor of the Washington Post, and Jacquee Petchel, Pulitzer-Prize-winning reporter for the Miami Herald. More recently, ASU announced the hiring of Julia Wallace, a top Cox Media Group executive and former managing editor at The Arizona Republic.

Robinson is now an editor at large for the Globe. He taught at Northeastern University in Boston from 2007 to 2014.

"I am delighted for this opportunity to play a role at one of the best — and certainly the most innovative and exciting — journalism schools in the country,’’ Robinson said in a statement.

“I’m honored to be a part of the school’s distinguished faculty, and I’m looking forward to working with so many talented students.’’

Missed "Spotlight" in the theaters or want to see it again? It's available on Netflix.

Robinson will be at ASU in the fall to screen and discuss the movie at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Cronkite School on ASU's downtown Phoenix campus.
