A former Catholic school teacher and army sergeant has appeared in Newcastle court, after being charged with more than a dozen child sex offences.

Last month former St Pius maths teacher Edward (Ted) Hall was charged with 13 child sex offences, dating back to the 1980s.

Charge sheets tendered in Newcastle Local Court allege the abuse relates to four boys, all under 16.

The alleged abuse took place at the Adamstown school as well as at places in Merewether.

The 66-year-old worked at St Pius between 1973 and 1983 and today travelled from his Riverina home to appear in court.

He is next due in court on October 19 and will face court on that day, via audio-visual link from Wagga Wagga.

Alleged abuse at school a focus of royal commission

Alleged abuse at the St Pius school is expected to be a focus during a royal commission probe into the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Diocese, with a hearing due to start next week.

The scope of the inquiry also includes how the Diocese responded to allegations of child sexual abuse made against convicted paedophile Father Vincent Ryan.

It will also look at the response of the Marist Brothers to allegations of child sexual abuse made against Brothers including Francis Cable known as Brother Romuald and Thomas Butler known as Brother Patrick.

The impacts of child sexual abuse on survivors, families, and the community will also be examined.

The royal commission hearing into Newcastle's Catholic diocese is expected to start next Wednesday.
