Outspoken cleric Fr Brian D’Arcy has told how women committed suicide because of sex beast Brendan Smyth.

The rebel priest opened up about the scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church in an astonishing interview published in Thursday's Hot Press magazine.

Fr D’Arcy discussed his own abuse at the hands of the religious during his youth – and says he would never have joined the priesthood if he knew the extent of the perversion.

And the 71-year-old shared his belief that the actions of paedophile priest Brendan Smyth resulted in lives being lost.

He said: “There have been people, young women, who took their own lives because of what Brendan Smyth did to them.

“I know this personally. And maybe they could have been saved if it had been reported earlier.”

Fr D’Arcy also gives his frank views on sex, contraception, homosexuality and marriage in what is a compassionate, shocking and sad interview.

And he is highly critical of Cardinal Sean Brady for taking taking confessional notes from Smyth yet choosing not to go to the Gardai.

He adds: “The system had him so brainwashed that he didn’t do the right thing. He was wrapped up in this whole secrecy thing.

“But there was more than him to blame.”

He says: “If you turn to the priesthood and find 50 per cent of the priesthood is gay, you have problem because it’s not representative of society itself.

“I think celibacy is a great idea if chosen freely, but I think compulsory celibacy is a terrible idea.”

Fr D’Arcy also addresses the controversy surrounding priests training in Maynooth amid claims of gay dating apps and an alleged homosexual subculture.

He said: “I have a difficulty with it, to be honest. If they’re searching on Grindr, putting themselves forward as partners or looking for partners, yes, I do have a problem with it.

“Because you can’t suddenly decide that after four years training everything disappears and I’m going to stop being sexually active. That doesn’t work.

“You’re simply coding yourself if you think that’s what’s going to happen.”

A defiant Fr D’Arcy – censored by the Vatican in 2010 for his outspoken views – thinks he may be thrown out of the priesthood for his latest no-holds-barred interview.

But he added: “I will still work to the day I die to try and tell the world of the compassion and the mercy of God in your personal life.”

The full interview is in Hot Press which goes on sale on Thursday.
