A priest son of former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey has been arrested over claims of historic child abuse.

Mark Carey was detained at his home after claims that he abused a girl, who is now in her 30s, when he was in his late teens and his father was a in the north east during the 1980s.

A Durham Police spokesman told MailOnline: 'A 51-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of historical sexual offences. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.'

A Church of England spokesman added: 'A 51-year-old priest in the Diocese of Leeds has been suspended by the Bishop following his arrest by Durham Constabulary concerning allegations of historical abuse.

'No further statement will be made at this time.'

According to The Sun, the family is devastated by the allegations, but the father-of-three not been seen since the arrest.

Earlier this year Lord Carey, who was Archbishop for 11 years from 1991, lambasted the Church of England for destroying the reputation of a celebrated bishop over unproven child abuse claims.

In a fierce attack on the church he once led, Lord Carey said he was ‘appalled’ at the way it handled the accusations against Bishop George Bell – whom he said had been judged guilty without a fair hearing.

Bishop Bell, who served in Chichester for 30 years until his death in 1958, was renowned during the Second World War as a peacemaker and almost certainly would have been Archbishop of Canterbury but for his denunciation of the Allied bombing of Dresden.

Last week Professor Alexis Jay, the head of the official wide-ranging inquiry into historical child abuse, warned that Lord Carey could face ‘explicit criticism’ over how he dealt with a paedophile bishop. Peter Ball, a former Bishop of Gloucester, was jailed last year for sex offences and misconduct in public office.

Claims of a cover-up arose after Ball accepted a police caution in 1993 to avoid being charged for indecent assault on a man while he was Bishop of Lewes. It was also revealed that Lord Carey wrote to the director of public prosecutions that year to express his concern about Ball’s ‘fragile health’.

Lord Carey applied to be personally represented at the inquiry, rather than by the Church, because of a possible conflict of interest.

Professor Jay said: ‘It is possible that Lord Carey, in his capacity as former Archbishop of Canterbury, may be subject to explicit criticism by the inquiry in due course.’

Lord Carey has denied any involvement in a cover-up of Ball’s offending. The 84-year-old was jailed at the Old Bailey last year after admitting a series of indecency offences and misconduct in public office.
