The son of Lord Carey, former Bishop of Bath and Wells, has been arrested over allegations of child sex abuse which date back to the 1980s.

Lord Carey, who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002, became Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham after he retired.

His alleged victim who is in her 30s claims she was assaulted when he was in his late teens. The complaint was made to Durham police.

A Church of England spokesman said: "A 51-year-old priest in the Diocese of Lees has been suspended by the Bishop following his arrest concerning allegations of historial abuse.

"No further statement will be made at this time."

A spokeswoman for Durham police confirmed that a 51-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of historial sexual offences.

"He has been bailed pending further inquiries," she said.

Lord Carey of Clifton was appointed principal of Trinity College, Bristol in 1982.
