Bishop Joseph Tyson of the Yakima Catholic Diocese has lost an election to chair a committee for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Instead, Bishop Timothy Doherty of Lafayette, Ind., is the new chairman-elect of the Committee on Protection of Children and Young People.

Elections were held Tuesday during the fall meeting of the national bishops’ conference in Baltimore.

Doherty received 128 votes to Tyson’s 86.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, Texas, was elected president of the national bishop’s group, succeeding Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, Ky. The bishops also chose the chairmen-elect of five committees and new members of the board of Catholic Relief Services.

Last week, the world’s largest group of clergy sex abuse victims, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), called for Tyson to withdraw his name to head the church abuse panel. Tyson did not do so.

On Nov. 10, David Clohessy, director of SNAP, said that Tyson had “done virtually nothing, above the legally required bare minimum, to safeguard kids. We think the other nominee (Doherty ) is a better ?choice.”

Monsignor Robert Siler, chancellor of the Yakima Diocese, noted in an email to the Yakima Herald-Republic: “The margins are about the same for all the candidates for the different positions, so I would personally not view the SNAP news release as having had any effect.”
