Pee Dee area pastor arrested for indecent exposure

HARTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Hartsville police say they have arrested a Bishopville pastor for indecent exposure after several reports of a “flasher” in areas near Coker College.

According to Lt. Mark Blair with Hartsville police, officers responded to Second Street near Coker College Saturday at 8 p.m. after receiving a call about a man exposing himself to a woman.

Police found the vehicle the victim described and spoke to the suspect, who later confessed to the crime and several other incidents in the area.

Xaiquiri Matthews, 28, of Bishopville was arrested and charged with indecent exposure and taken to the Darlington County Detention Center.

Booking records say Matthews was released on a $25,000 bond Sunday afternoon.

Matthews is listed as the pastor of First Baptist Church of Bishopville, according to the church’s website. A photo of Matthews, along with a brief biography notes the church leader as an Augusta, Georgia native who gained his Master of Divinity in 2014 from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He has been with the church since July 2016, according to the website.

News13 visited First Baptist Church of Bishopville Tuesday afternoon and we were told by a church member that the church had no comment on Matthews’ arrest at this time.

Our administration works closely with local law enforcement and college safety officers to ensure that our campus and the surrounding areas are secure. Protocols are in place to inform and protect our community from potential threats. In this case, all procedures were followed appropriately, leading to an arrest, and the individual in question has been banned from all campus property.
