Anglican Priest Undressed, Touched Boy in South West Town, Wa Court Hears

A man has told a Perth court he was repeatedly undressed and touched in the groin by an Anglican priest in the late 1970s, while going to church with his mother. Retired priest Raymond Sydney Cheek, 84, has pleaded not guilty to five charges spanning 30 years, including indecent dealing with a child under 14 years. The first charge related to an alleged offence on the Easter weekend of 1955. One man, who attended church with his mother in a south-west WA town, claims he was undressed and touched by Cheek on multiple occasions beginning in the 1970s. He told a District Court jury the priest began touching him from the age of eight. "He seemed to be very convincing as to the "He seemed to be very convincing as to the reasons why he did it," the man said. Another man testified he was fondled as an 11-year-old by Cheek following a boy scout camping trip in Perth in the mid-1950s. "I thought it was wrong. I knew it was wrong," he said. "Mr Cheek kept reiterating not to tell anyone." Cheek served at multiple parishes in the South West and Great Southern regions before he retired in 2002. The trial continues.
