Security has been increased around the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark as the city gets ready to welcome its new archbishop.

Over 500 church officials gathered at the cathedral Thursday night for a vigil for Cardinal Joseph Tobin, who be the first cardinal in New Jersey to be installed as archbishop.

Cardinal Tobin, already wearing the cardinals' zucchetto atop his head, told congregants at the vigil that he considered it to be the beginning of their collaboration.

He told News 12 New Jersey earlier this week, “This is an important archdiocese and an important institution. A great mass of people. So in the face of all of that if I think it's all on me. It's frightening."

Church officials say that the installation of Cardinal Tobin is special. There is already a cardinal in New York, and now New Jersey has one.

More than 50 high-ranking officials from the Catholic Church are expected to attend Friday’s ceremony, as well as Gov. Chris Christie. Because of this security, is tight and law enforcement is keeping a watchful eye.

“We have a public event and there’s heightened concert that it runs safely and smoothly,” says Newark Archdiocese spokesman Jim Goodness.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is heading up the multi-jurisdictional security effort.
