NORTH FORT MYERS -

A child care worker was fired after being accused of child abuse at a North Fort Myers daycare.

Lee County deputies said Janet Crappse violently dropped a baby into a crib at Kings Kidz Academy. A spokesperson for the daycare said everything was caught on surveillance video.

Kings Kidz Academy is operated by North Shore Alliance Church on Mariana Avenue.

Crappse has been in trouble before. She was charged with theft in 2013. The head pastor said he didn't know about Crappse's previous charge and parents learned of the latest allegations on Thursday.

"She's with the young kids; she's with the babies," said parent Nancy Macclugage.

"She deserved to be fired," said parent Logan Bolen.

"That would be very disturbing because my daughter goes to school here," said Macclugage.

Pastor Tim Richter said a parent called to report bruising on their child and said the daycare found surveillance video showing what happened.

A Lee County Sheriff's Office report said the video shows Crappse pick up a crying baby from a crib and drop him more than a foot into another.

"I'm kind of a little baffled," said Macclugage.

Richter said the daycare contacted the Department of Children and Families, which said it's investigating Crappse and the day are.

ABC7 went to Cape Coral to try and speak with Crappse. Cape Coral police officers were there when we arrived.

"The guy over there went crazy," said neighbor Eric Nicely. "He tried to run down a news lady."

Witnesses said someone who lives with Crappse got into a black SUV and "drove directly at the news crew," hitting a reporter from another outlet.

"I could see her visibly shaken up; I was shaken up," said neighbor Kathleen Long.

Police later arrested the driver, but he hasn't been identified.

The news crew is OK and said they were just shaken up by the incident.

As for the baby injured at daycare, he is also OK and Richter said he's still attending the day care.

Crappse told deputies she did not remember much about the January 3rd incident except that she did drop the baby about five inches into the crib.

She is charged with cruelty toward a child and was released from jail on bond.

Get More: Daycare child abuse

According to US News and World Report, child abuse in daycare is rare.

In fact, children are far more likely to be abused by family members and acquaintances than the adults hired to care for them. That includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect.

This isn't the first time this daycare has been in the news.

A year ago, a gay couple tried to enroll their kids there, but since the school is affiliated with a church, the couple and their kids were denied.

Leadership at the church said they have a right to refuse people if their lifestyle conflicts with their beliefs.
